President

The Japanese Society of Cultural Anthropology (JASCA), comprising of 2000 members, wishes to express its profound sorrow regarding the destruction, by a devastating fire, of the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro and the loss of its incalculable collection of 20 million items.

Our hearts go out to our colleagues at the National Museum and to the students of the Graduate Program in Social Anthropology (PPGAS/MN/UFRJ). We express our deepest sympathies to the source communities of the artifacts and materials that were housed and destroyed in this disaster, including those from indigenous peoples and Afro-Brazilian communities in Brazil.

We firmly believe that the research and education in anthropology at the National Museum and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro will recover strongly from this tragedy. We stand committed to offering our assistance in recovery efforts.
